When first starting out, it can be daunting to find a good balance between categories and tags. The table below provides examples of popular blog categories and how you can “tag” them for organization:

Category Tag
News local, world, sports, weather
Real Estate selling, buying, deals, business, trends, advice
Music rock, blues, jazz, contemporary, classical
Food local, exotic, vegetarian, seafood, americana

Managing Categories for Posts

  • In the Dashboard, Navigate to Posts → Categories
  • On the right hand side, you can manage, edit and delete existing categories
  • On the left, fill in a Name and optional Description for each category you wish to add
  • Click Add New Category

Managing Tags for Posts

  • In the Dashboard, Navigate to Posts → Tags
  • On the right hand side, you can manage and edit existing tags
  • On the left, fill in a Name and optional Description for each tag you wish to add
  • Click Add New Tag

Adding Categories and Tags to a Post

  • In the Dashboard, Navigate to Posts → All Posts
  • In the sidebar, locate the box labeled Categories
  • Select an existing category for the Post or add a new one
  • In the sidebar, locate the box labeled Tags
  • Begin typing the Tag to search for existing ones, or add new Tags
  • You can add multiple Tags to the Tag field separated by commas
  • Click Add to assign your series of Tags to this Post
  • Use the x to the left of each Tag to remove it if needed

Congratulations! You now know how to use categories and tags for the purpose of organizing your blog and article content.

  1. Whats up are using WordPress for your site platform? I’m new to the blog world but I’m trying to get started and set up my own. Do you require any coding knowledge to make your own blog? Any help would be really appreciated!
