Redirects are commmonly used to direct users from one URL to the correct URL for the page they or website they are trying to visit.

Each time a visitor is redirected, the visitor’s web browser has to make a new request for the new URL, which takes time to complete. Depending on the time it takes for the request to finish, each redirect can cause the visitor to wait for a few seconds before the visitor finally makes it to the correct web page.

The main page of your website should generally never redirect visitors because the visitors will have to wait longer to see the main page load. Redirects should generally only be used in specific cases, like redirecting users to use a secure HTTPS connection or if the website now has a new URL.
