Web fonts can be a great way to add style and a unique appearance to web pages. However, having too many fonts in use on the same page can slow down the overall performance. Each font that is used on the page has to be separately downloaded and processed by the web browser when loading the page. Downloading fonts takes time, and when the font is not downloaded web browsers may either make text invisible until the necessary font is downloaded or the text on the page will flicker when the font finally arrives. Neither of these behaviors provide good experiences for website visitors, in addition to slowing down the overall web page.
