Websites that need to support printing their web pages can specify special Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) files that tell web browsers how to style the web page’s content to be more printer-friendly.

Websites that do not need to have printer-friendly web pages do not usually need to have a print-specific CSS file. Loading unnecessary print-specific stylesheets slows down website performance by requiring extra CSS files to be downloaded, even if they are never used. Website loading performance can be improved by removing print-specific stylesheets entirely or by using the @media query for the type print to specify the styling that should be applied only in cases where the web page is going to be printed.
