I have a strange situation going on. I’ve added some on page anchor tags so folks can jump to a specific section of some of our pages. Every once in a while I get a Google Mobile Usability error that says the page is “too wide”. What I’m finding when I check out the affected pages is that a bunch of   characters have been added around the anchor. I can go into the text view of the page and delete them, which seems to fix that error, but as soon as I go back to the visual editor, then return to the text editor, additional   characters are added, in sets of 2. On our site this is happening on our /videogram page and on our /hire-support page.

How do I stop this from happening? Even though I save the page after deleting the extra non-breaking space characters, they still get added. I don’t want to have to go in every few months and delete these spontaneously generated characters.

    Thanks.

    Hi Peggy-

Thanks for reaching out, and thanks for using the Post and Page Builder for WordPress. I’m sorry to hear about the frustrating space characters.

This bug has been haunting WordPress users for some time, and it’s tough to completely resolve because it only happens to certain browsers when switching between the editors.

I made a copy of your /hire-support/ page, and I couldn’t get the bug to occur for me in the latest version of Chrome for Linux. You may be able to get around this easily by switching to a different browser, such as Chrome or Firefox.

The article I linked above also has a number of different technical solutions, including this one that you can copy and paste directly into a plugin like Code Snippets.

Thanks. I’m glad to know it’s a known bug and not something I was doing wrong, but sorry to hear that it can be browser specific. I assume you mean it’s dependent on the browser I’m using for development, not anything to do with the browser used by a site visitor?

I’ll check out the articles you listed.

    Hi Peggy-

Yes, that’s correct- it’s related to the browser you yourself are using when you’re switching between the Text and Visual editors, not your visitors.
