Hi, I have recently changed the hosting of my domain from DreamHost, to Solucionhost.

While I was still on DreamHost, I downloaded a Backup file of my site with Total Upkeep.

Then, on my new hosting, I installed WordPress, the Total Upkeep plugin, and then uploaded my Backup file.

When I tried to restore my Backup, WordPress got corrupted.

I know there is another way to properly migrate WordPress sites form one hosting to another (with the download link system), BUT is there any way I can use the Backup file Ive already downloaded from my previous site, to install it on my new WordPress?

    Thanks in advance,

    Juan

    Hello Juan-

Thanks for reaching out, and thanks for using Total Upkeep to migrate your WordPress website.

When you say that after you restored your backup and it became corrupted, did you see any error messages, or can you describe what happened?

The main thing to keep in mind when you’re migrating the site to a new host is to use the Transfers menu to restore the backup. This keeps it from overwriting your wp-config.php settings, such as the database name and password. If you saw the error message Error establishing database connection, that’s the most likely explanation why.

One way that you can get around the download link system is to follow this process:

    1. Upload your backup normally.
    2. Click Get Download link and copy it
    3. Paste the download link into the transfers tab (even though it’s already on the same server)
    4. Restore the backup from the transfers tab.

Another possibility is to simply edit your wp-config.php file after your restoration and replace the database settings with the correct ones for your new hosting account.

If your site was corrupted in some other way after the restoration, let us know what errors or issues you encountered and we’ll be happy to help further.
