Event Recap: San Diego WordCamp

Blog, WordCamps

This past weekend, we flew out to California to attend another WordCamp! This camp was held in the lovely city of San Diego. The timing couldn’t have been better, since right when we were flying out of Minneapolis, MN, a mid-April blizzard was just starting. Needless to say, we were pretty happy to be spending the weekend in warm, sunny San Diego! After narrowly escaping the Minnesota snowstorm, we arrived in California Friday morning. We met up with Tessa from Pantheon shortly thereafter, at Sea World. We talked about the tech industry, web hosting, what’s happening in the world of the internet – all while doing some Orca watching. Later that evening, we attended the Speaker and Sponsor event at the San Diego Firehouse Museum, located in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego. Touring the museum was pretty incredible, as it features firefighting equipment from as far back as the 1800s. This was a great way to kick off the beginning of San Diego’s WordCamp. We have always been especially fond of this particular WordCamp, because it’s so close to one of our main offices in Los Angeles. Saturday, we arrived early to set up our booth at San Diego City College, which was the chosen venue for the WordCamp. Since Boldie was around for moral support, getting set up for the show was a breeze. Saturday, we spent the day connecting with speakers, talking with attendees, and networking with fellow sponsors. The day’s sessions were both insightful and useful, covering topics such as using images to make your WordPress site come alive, tips on back-end development, and much more. Later that evening, we met up with Corey Webb from Reaktiv Studios for dinner at the House of Blues. Afterward, we headed out to the WordCamp afterparty and the Museum of Man. This was a great venue to really connect with other attendees, and it was a nice change of pace to attend an afterparty in a museum. Sunday morning, there was an hour dedicated to networking and getting to know other attendees. Afterwards, the keynote presentation was given by Dre Armeda from GoDaddy / Sucuri, entitled “How Transition Can Empower Your Business”. Sunday afternoon, Mike Demo gave his popular talk “Which Way Does Your Duck Face”. This talk covers the ins and outs of A/B split testing and how to get the most out of the process for your website. After the WordCamp concluded, we met up with our friends Kyle Ledbetter from Teradata and Chris Adams from Rochen Hosting for dinner. Monday morning, we flew to our office in Los Angeles since we were so close to home. It was great to see the California team and get some work done in the office. This was another great WordCamp overall – we’re looking forward to the next one already!
